13 of the Craziest Car Features Throughout Auto History
Some car features made us wonder what took the inventor so long. English engineer and inventor George Cayley invented the seat belt in the late 19th century, and other manufacturers refined the concept over the years. But when Volvo introduced the modern 3-point seat belt in the 20th century (1959, precisely), the world wondered why no one thought about that before.
On the other hand, some car features are purely to amaze. Land Rover's transparent hood, where virtual images of the terrain under the SUV are projected on the windshield to create a 'transparent hood'; or the gull-wing doors pioneered by models like the Mercedes-Benz 300SL and the infamous DeLorean DMC-12, are examples of features with the primary purpose of amazing us mortals.
Yet, some car features symbolize automotive excesses — unnecessary yet treasured. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury features an integrated tea set safely stashed in the wide center console in the back seat.
