A New Jersey woman texted about dinner while driving. Then a pedestrian was dead. Now she faces up to 10 years in prison for texting while driving.

In one of the state’s first cases to rely on texting while driving to establish recklessness, it has now become official: texting while driving is now on par with drunken driving.

The victim was out for walk and a taste of fresh air during a break from her job as a scientist at a New Jersey fragrance manufacturer. She and her husband had been trying to get pregnant, and brief bouts of exercise, away from the laboratory’s smells and fumes, were part of that plan.

Lives extinguished and families torn apart.

Accidents related to cell phone use and/or texting have skyrocketed 86 percent since 2009.
